Description

Walnuts Farm Barn is a threshing barn, likely built in the late 16th century, which has been partially adapted for animal use. The roof structure above the tie beam level was probably replaced in the 19th century, and a southeast outshot was added around 1900.

The barn is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding on stone footings, while the south end wall and outshots are constructed of brick in English garden wall bond. It features a slate roof that is gabled to the north and hipped to the south, with the possibility that it was originally thatched.

The barn has a four-bay plan, which was likely originally five bays, with a threshing bay located in the penultimate bay from the north. Outshots have been added to the northeast, southeast, south, and southwest for animal use.

On the exterior, the west side has wooden ledged double doors serving as the cart entrance, along with a stable door at the southwest corner. The cart doors on the east side have been replaced with corrugated iron. The brick outshot on the south side features round-headed arched openings, and behind this, the original south wall still shows old weatherboarding.

Inside, the barn has an oak wall frame with good scantling, including jowled bay posts and curved braces that connect to the tie beams. There is a midrail and a notable survival of curved braces above it, generally two per bay, along with studs. The south bay has a later inserted floor, and the two curved braces for this truss were replaced to function as down braces rather than up braces. The roof structure above the tie beams and wall plates was replaced, likely in the 19th century, with angled queen struts, purlins, collar beams, and rafters, along with a ridge-piece. The outshots retain some stall partitions, and there is a wooden feed rack at the south end.
