Description
The Deanery, which includes the former stables, is a 16th-century vicarage located in Battle. This two-storey building features an attic and has five windows and five dormers. It is constructed of red brick and has two bay windows on both the ground and first floors. The main angles of the front and the angles of the bays are accented with long and short stone quoins. Above the first floor, there are stone stringcourses, and the building is topped with an embattled brick parapet that encircles the bays and culminates in a crow-stepped gable at the center, which houses the central dormer. The windows are casement style with stone mullions, and the rainwater heads are dated 1669. The entrance porch, built in 1670, features half-round Ionic columns, a moulded frieze, and a pediment, along with an original 16th-century door consisting of six panes with a moulded frame. A crow-stepped gable was added to the porch in 1960, along with additional structures at the back of the house. The stables, which date from 1670, are attached to the west side of the house and are considered part of the same property.
