Description
Church House is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Lane in Northiam. It consists of two houses combined into one. The eastern wing was constructed in 1593 by the Reverend John Frewin, a Puritan minister who served as Rector of Northiam from 1582 to 1628 and established the Frewin family in the area. He lived in this wing until his death in 1628. This section is T-shaped, timber-framed, and features weatherboarding that mimics masonry, with a tiled roof and gable ends on the north and south. It has casement windows with small square panes and a doorway with a flat hood supported by brackets. This wing has two storeys and four windows.
The western wing was added in the late 18th century or early 19th century by Captain Thomas Frewin, John Frewin's great-grandson. This part has two storeys and an attic, with eight windows, three pedimented dormers—one curved and two triangular. It is built of red brick and includes a stringcourse and a dentilled eaves cornice, along with a tiled roof. The windows retain their glazing bars, and the doorway features pilasters, a projecting cornice, and an eight-panelled door. Inside, there is late 16th century or early 17th century panelling and a staircase.
