Description
This is an outbuilding located 5 yards southeast of Wardsbrook Farmhouse, dating from the 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, featuring a ground floor made of red and blue brick on the north side. The roof is hipped and covered with plain tiles. Access to both the ground and first floors is from the north side, which has two openings on each floor, all with diagonal mullions that are likely not original.
Inside, the building consists of three bays and has a queen-post side purlin roof. The posts are mostly gunstock-jowled, with some rounded jowled posts from the 18th century. The flooring's age is uncertain. There is a single red and blue brick kiln located to the northeast, which has a conical plain tiled roof without a cowl and vane. Additionally, there are two kilns to the southeast, which lack conical roofs and are dated 1833 on the brick. Some believe this outbuilding may have originally been a detached kitchen from the 15th century, but it appears to have been a barn made from reused materials that was converted into storage for an oasthouse in 1833.
