Description

The Hooke is a former large mansion, originally built in the 17th century, with significant alterations made over the years. Since it was first listed, the southern portion, which was added in 1830, has been demolished. The oldest part of the building is the former middle section, now at the south end, which has been refaced in brick and stone and features a steeply-pitched hipped slate roof. Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase, panelling, and fireplaces. The east front was refaced with ashlar when the north wing was added in the 18th century. This section has two storeys and two windows, while the remainder of the east front has three storeys, sash windows with glazing bars, and a chimney breast. The north front, which was formerly the main entrance, has seven windows arranged in two bays of three windows each on all floors, along with a stringcourse and a castellated parapet. The wide glazing bars are intact, and the central doorway, which had pilasters and a projecting cornice, has been converted into a window. To the south-west, there are one large and three smaller pointed archways that were once part of the verandah added in 1830, now in a state of ruin in the garden.
