Description

The Swan Public House is a public house that has a rear section dating from the 17th century and an early 18th-century front range. It features a 20th-century projecting bar front and a left side extension. The building is constructed from brick, some of which is painted, and has tile hanging with a tiled roof and end brick chimneystacks. The front range from the 18th century is two storeys high and has three windows. It is made of painted brick with an eaves cornice that is boarded over, possibly hiding original decoration underneath. There are two 16-pane sash windows and one early 18th-century 12-pane sash window. The 20th-century bar extension is made of painted brick and has sashes with horns. The right side elevation features 20th-century tile hanging and an attic casement window, while the left side elevation has an external brick chimneystack and a 20th-century extension. The rear elevation of the front range is tile-hung and includes a gable with a 20th-century staircase window. At right angles to the front range are two likely 17th-century ranges with half-hipped roofs, tile-hung on the first floor and brick on the ground floor, featuring sash windows on the first floor and sliding casements on the ground floor, along with two external chimneystacks. Inside, there is a fine early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and square newel posts, an attic staircase, a staggered purlin roof, and an inglenook fireplace. Two documents in the East Sussex Record Office, known as the Shiffner MSS, refer to the Swan Inn and are dated 1606 and 1623.
