Description

The Congregational Chapel, dated 1840 and displayed on a panel in the facade, is a building in a simplified classical style. Constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries, the congregation was originally founded in 1671, moved to the site in 1793, and the building was enlarged in 1810 before being rebuilt in 1840. It has a hipped slate roof, painted stucco exterior with a stone parapet, a deep frieze, a plain cornice, a blocking course, and a low central pediment. A moulded first-floor string runs around the building, and there is a stone plinth at the base. The chapel is one storey high, with a gallery facing the street. It has three bays separated by full-height pilasters. Semi-circular headed, marginally glazed sash windows are in the outer bays at gallery level, and there are two square-headed windows below. A central door is set within a doorcase of pilasters, a frieze, a simple cornice, and a vestigial pediment, and is approached by four stone steps. The interior is plain, with a gallery located at the entrance end.
