Description

The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Greenham, constructed between 1875 and 1876, with a north aisle added in 1888 and a baptistery completed in 1895, designed by H. Woodyer in an Early English style. The church is built of flint with Bath stone dressings and features tiled roofs. A gabled bellcote is positioned on the ridge to the west, which has two openings and a weathervane. The structure includes a nave, south porch, north aisle, western baptistery, chancel, and vestry.

The nave features a gabled south porch with a double chamfered arch and three paired lancets on the east side. The west end has two tall lancets and an additional one above in the gable. Below, the baptistery has six lancets facing west and a parapet. The chancel has five lancets on the south side and triple lancets at the east end. The north aisle consists of five bays with paired lancets, and there is a gabled and half hipped vestry to the north-east.

Inside, the nave has a five-bay north arcade supported by marble columns, and the roof is decorated with painted and stencilled designs. The chancel arch is composed of two orders with a hood mould and stops. In the chancel, there is a triple shafted lancet on the east side with moulded capitals and bases, along with a sedile and piscina on the south side. The walls and roof of the chancel feature painted and stencilled decoration added after the completion of the north aisle in 1588. The baptistery to the west contains two arches. Notable contemporary fittings include a reredos, altar rails, pulpit, and font, along with c.1618 Dutch glass depicting The Tree of Jesse. This church is recognized for the completeness of its fittings and internal decoration.
