Description
Merry Ways Norman Cottage is a pair of attached estate cottages built in 1891 by the architect Richard Norman Shaw for Lloyd Harry Baxendale of Greenham Lodge. Constructed from red brick in English bond with tile-hanging, the cottages feature a clay plain tile gabled roof and large brick axial stacks with corbelled brick tops.
The design is symmetrical, with a double-depth plan where the main rooms are located at the front and service rooms at the back, with stairs rising through central stacks. The exterior is two storeys high, showcasing a symmetrical four-window southwest front. The first floor jetties out and is tile-hung, with the outer bays projecting and gabled. These gables are adorned with fish-scale tile-hanging, while the centre first floor windows break the eaves and have raking roofs. The ground floor features five-light iron-frame casements with leaded panes and plank doors with strap hinges.
The northeast rear elevation is also symmetrical with gables, the outer gables being larger. The first floor is jettied and tile-hung, with gables similarly hung with fish-scale tiles. The windows include 1, 2, 3, and 4-light casements with leaded panes, arranged symmetrically except for a small 2-light window slightly off-centre to the right on the first floor, and two stair windows between the storeys.
Inside, the plan remains intact, with stairs rising through arches in the central stacks. The interior is complete with panelled doors and chimneypieces.
