Description
The Church of St Alban and Church Hall is an Anglican church built in 1933 by the architects Welch, Cachemaille-Day, and Lander. It is constructed from rendered brick with Weldon stone dressings and features clay plain tile roofs with gabled ends. The church has a cruciform plan, with the altar located under the crossing tower and a Lady Chapel in the chancel, along with north and south transepts and a 3-bay nave with wide aisles. The nave was originally intended to be longer, and the west end was completed at a later date. The church hall is attached to the south transept and was built at the same time.
In terms of architectural style, the church is designed in the Gothic style. The exterior features include 5-light Perpendicular windows with 4-centred arches in the chancel and north transept, a nave west window with a 2-centred arch and Geometric tracery, and 3-light straight-head Perpendicular windows in the aisles. The crossing tower is large and squat, with diagonal buttresses, a circular stair-turret on the southeast corner, battlements, and 3-light straight-head Perpendicular windows in the top stage. There is a later porch with a flat roof at the west end. The church hall has large wooden mullion-transom windows and hipped roofs above the eaves, with the south end featuring a hipped roof with lower eaves and a central gable set back, which includes a Tudor arch doorway. There are also later additions to the east side of the church hall.
Inside, the church has a spacious interior with plastered walls and stone arches. The wide nave and aisles are supported by 3-bay double-chamfered 4-centred arch arcades and large moulded 2-centred crossing arches without capitals, with the east and south arches integrating into the round stair-turret. The roof is ceiled with boarded panels and includes tie-beams and tall crown-posts. The furnishings are complete, featuring an altar under the crossing, a simple wooden altar rail with solid low side screens to the sanctuary, a pulpit, seating, and a polygonal font with a cover. The church hall's roof is ceiled with plywood and includes a stage at the north end.
