Description
The building is a post office constructed in 1902 by Hawke. It initially served as a Custom House, replacing an earlier Custom House dating from 1847 (located on Canute Road, now Union Castle House). The building was superseded by a new Custom House on Orchard Lane in 1965. It is designed in a "Wrennaissance" style.
The building is three storeys high, constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and has a hipped slate roof. There are three projections: a central one and two side projections. The central projection features a curved open pediment, while the side projections have triangular open pediments. The building has twelve sash windows with intact glazing bars. The central projection features two pilasters and two pairs of engaged columns extending through the first and second floors. The single-bay end projections have coupled pilasters. A string course runs between the ground and first floors. The second-floor windows are flanked by engaged Tuscan columns. The first-floor windows are set within Gibbs surrounds, and the ground-floor windows are round-headed with keystones. The end bays contain doorcases set within round-headed arches framed by coupled engaged Tuscan columns.
