Description

Nos. 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 St. Mary's Road are a group of six almshouses built in 1679 and 1687. They are constructed of red brick with cement rendered window dressings, a porch, and the ground floor to the left. The building features an old tile roof and is 1 and a half storeys high.

The south front has a plinth, a plat band, and parapeted gable ends topped with triangular pediments. There are eight gabled eaves dormers, each with 2-light diamond leaded casements, and three ridge stacks, each with four diamond shafts. A central projecting two-storey porch has a moulded string course and a shaped gable end that is crowned by a triangular pediment. The first floor of the porch contains a 2-light diamond leaded casement with a circular stone panel beneath. The entrance is marked by a rusticated round arch with impost bands, flanked by small round arched windows on either side.

On the ground floor, there are six 2-light diamond leaded casements and boarded doors positioned between the first and second, and the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth windows. These doors have four-centred arched heads, cement rendered architraves, and triangular pediments with circular motifs in the tympana. A stone plaque on the left-hand return wall of the porch is inscribed: "Seymour Almshouses Founded 1679 Restored 1960." These almshouses were established by Sir Henry Seymour.
