Description

33-34 Market Place is a shop with accommodation above, built in the mid-19th century, enlarged in the late 19th century, and altered in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The street-facing east elevation is made of red brick with stucco dressings and features a modern shopfront faced in Bath Stone. The roof is covered with slate.

The building consists of a principal three-storey section with two-storey rear extensions. The 19th-century front block is L-shaped, while the later rear extensions are rectangular.

The modern ground floor shopfront includes four arched, full-height window bays, each framed by Doric pilasters that support a simple entablature, with a letting agency sign located to the south.

On the first and second floors, there is a 2:1:1:1 arrangement of bays, each containing a plate-glass sash window with a segmental head. Each window has a stucco swept hood and keystone above it. The first two bays are flanked by paired pilaster strips that extend from the first floor to the top of the second floor. The three northernmost bays are separated by a single pilaster strip, with paired pilasters marking the northernmost side of the east elevation. A band runs between the first and second floors, spanning the space between each pilaster strip.

The coupled pilaster strips end at the building’s apex with bracket capitals, and a deep stucco frieze runs between them. A party wall with a chimney stack indicates the historic division between numbers 33 and 34, with the roof of number 33 being higher than that of number 34, although both roofs share the same pitch.

The extensions to the west of 33 and 34 Market Place have flat roofs with skylights and include various south-facing window bays that overlook the Corn Exchange Arcade. The building was formerly listed as the Trustee Savings Bank.
