Description
Newton School is a board school type building, dating from around 1874, and is likely designed by architect J Morris. It is considered one of the better examples in Reading. The school consists of two buildings, one and a half and two storeys tall, designed in a gabled Gothic style. The structure is made of red brick, featuring rounded cills and label strings that are raised over the arches of the first-floor windows. The eaves are toothed, and there are lighter brick bands along with yellow brick patterning in the tympana above the windows. The roof is tiled, with crested ridges and toothed verges. The windows are arranged in three and four light configurations within moulded surrounds. Both blocks have outer bays that are gabled breaks. The left-hand building includes tumbled brick in the chimneys and retains elements of a school belfry, as well as several straight-headed lancets. The right-hand building features a large three-bay gable above a pointed entrance, which is adorned with several moulded orders. The school faces School Terrace, which was built at the same time and by the same architect. Overall, it forms a pleasant group both in Newtown and as seen from the train.
