Description

  1. SCHOOL TERRACE 5128 Newton School SU 7273 7/565 SU 7373 8/565 II 2. Board school type. Circa 1874. Architect J Morris probably. One of the better examples in Reading. 2 buildings - 1½ and 2 storeys in gabled Gothic - derived style. Red brick with rounded cill and label strings, latter raised over 1st floor window arches. Toothed eaves. Lighter brick bands and yellow brick patterning in tympana over windows. Tiled roof with crested ridges and toothed verges 3 and 4 light windows in moulded surrounds. Outer bays in both blocks are gabled breaks. Left hand building has tumbled brick in chimneys and retrains of school belfry; also a number of straight headed lancets. Right hand building has large 3 bay gable over pointed entrance of several moulded orders. Faces School Terrace (same date, by same architect). A pleasant group both in Newtown and from the train.
