Description
The Steam Engine Makers' Society Memorial, located in Kingston Cemetery, is a monument dating from 1878. It is made of granite and features a four-sided stone monolith set on a stepped base. The memorial bears an inscription in bronze letters that reads: "This monument is erected by the members of the Steam Engine Makers' Society as a last token of their esteem to their departed Bretheren. 1878". It commemorates Richard Whittle, George W. Adams, and Thomas H. Jenkins, who lost their lives in a boiler explosion on board H.M.S. Thunderer at Spithead on July 14th, 1876.
