Description
The gate piers and gates at Milton Cemetery were built in 1910 by GE Smith. They are made of ashlar stone and iron. There are four stone piers, each featuring a deep moulded cornice and base, topped with a metal urn on an elaborate metal sub-structure that is supported by a stone base. The central piers have recessed panels with narrow incised margins on each face; the front and rear faces have a projecting splayed stone face at the lower half, which is adorned with a stone garland. At the top of the recessed panel, there is a keystone that displays the City of Portsmouth coat of arms, with the date 1910 inscribed below. The two smaller flanking side piers have plain recessed panels on each side, surrounded by a moulded frame. The main gates consist of two leaves, while the smaller side gates are crafted in ornate ironwork, each hung from wide pierced iron fretted posts. The City of Portsmouth coat of arms is also featured on the centre rail of each side gate.
