Description

A row of six cottages, dating from the early 19th century, located in two blocks at numbers 1 and 2, and 3 to 6, on Napier Road, Southsea, Portsmouth. The cottages were restored and altered in 1971. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with plain tiled hipped roofs. Numbers 1 and 2 each have two bays, while numbers 3 to 6 each have four bays. A six-panelled glazed door sits beneath a segmental brick arch on the right side of numbers 1 and 2 and the left side of numbers 3, 4 and 5. To the left of numbers 1 and 2 and to the right of numbers 3, 4 and 5 is a 12-pane sash window also set under a segmental brick arch. The first floor windows are similar sashes, with attached shutters. Number 6 has paired 16-pane sashes under a segmental brick arch on both the ground and first floors. The rear elevation of numbers 3 to 6, facing Wisborough Road, is stuccoed. Number 6 projects forward on Wisborough Road and has an entrance on its return side, behind a boundary wall, along with a rectangular bay window. The first floor of number 6 has three 12-pane sash windows set under a cambered arch. Numbers 3 to 5 each have a 20th-century door and porch on the rear elevation, with a 12-pane sash window beside it. On the first floor, each has a 12-pane sash window, with a small 20th-century casement window to its right.
