Description

Manor Farm House, also known as Calverton Manor House, is a large stone building that has two storeys and attics, featuring deep pitched early tiled roofs and stone chimney stacks with late brick flues. It likely dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid 17th century. The building has a roughly L-shaped plan, with the entrance front facing west.

On the south end of the west front, there is a projecting gabled wing that contains one 18th-century sash window on both floors. The main central section of the west face features two high gabled dormers and two-light mullioned windows with leaded casements. All gables are topped with coping and kneelers. A two-storey gabled porch includes a two-light mullioned window on the first floor and a continuous moulding at the first floor level, which steps up at the center to enclose a carved datestone marked S.B. (Simon Benett) 1659. The outer doorway has an elliptical head with a carved console key, while the inner doorway is square-headed with a moulded wooden frame and Gothic glazing in the upper part of the doors.

Two of the early mullioned windows remain, while others have been replaced with 18th-century casements and sashes, some located in early openings that show moulded stonework. At the north end of the building, there is a long lower wing with alternating thick and thin ashlar on the east side and rubble on the north side. This wing has high tiled roofs and an ashlar chimney with a moulded string and cap, along with two three-light mullioned windows featuring flat arches over labels.

At the rear of the main wing, there is a projecting section with a jettied first floor, and the upper walls are made of lath and plaster. Three surviving three-light mullioned windows with labels can be found here. The overall rooflines vary, and three early stone fireplaces remain, characterized by their high and wide design with moulded four-centre arch heads.
