Description
The Temple of Music at Tyringham Hall is a garden pavilion and chapel built in 1926 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for F. Koenig. It is one of a pair of matching classical pavilions located on the northwest axis of the Hall, flanking the swimming pool. The structure features limestone walling with a portico and dressings made of Portland stone, topped with a concrete dome above the cornice.
Inside, there is a domed vestibule that leads into a short nave and an apsidal chancel. The pedimented portico is supported by four Corinthian pilasters and has a central semicircular arched entrance. A Latin inscription runs along the frieze, and there is a carving in the tympanum. The flank elevations include two arched stone-framed windows that project on brackets.
The interior vestibule showcases green scagliola Corinthian columns and a patterned marble floor, with altars located in shallow side apses. The nave features black Corinthian pilasters, a metal grille floor designed for organ sound, and carved oak stalls, panelling, and doors. A marble altar is positioned with a circular stair leading to the crypt on either side. The sanctuary beyond has a floor at crypt level, with the organ situated below the nave.
