Description

Cowper's Summerhouse, located in the garden of the Cowper and Newton Museum, is a small structure dating from the mid-18th century. It is rendered and features a tiled roof. The summerhouse has a replica of the original oak door, which is now housed in the museum. There is a sash window in the rear wall and an oval window in the east gable. Inside, built-in benches provide seating. This summerhouse was used by William Cowper as a retreat for writing, where he composed 'John Gilpin' and much of 'The Task'.
