Description

Wavendon House is a country house dating from the late 17th century, substantially reconstructed around 1703 for James Selby and enlarged in 1798 for Henry Hoare. The house is built of painted brick and stucco, with hipped slate roofs. The south elevation features a plinth, ground and first-floor sill bands, a plain cornice, and a parapet. The central block, dating to around 1703 and altered in 1798, has six bays with sash windows and moulded architraves. A Greek Doric porch with four plain columns sits to the left, with a two-storey canted bay window to the right. A left-hand wing of 1798 has a projecting two-storey canted bay window with three windows. A lower, painted brick service wing from the 18th century extends to the right, featuring a hipped slate roof and a dentil brick cornice. The central bays of this wing project slightly and are topped with a pediment. The west elevation of the 1798 wing has five bays and a central semi-circular arched door. The north elevation of the central block incorporates a moulded cornice, a central pediment, and an early 19th-century half-octagon projecting from the ground floor. A small Game Store, projecting from the service wing, is built upon brick arches and has a slate roof.
