Description
The Former Assistant Queen's Harbourmaster's Office is an office building dating from around 1770, with some early 19th-century alterations. It features painted render, a brick lateral stack, and a hipped slate roof, showcasing a late Georgian style. The building has a two-room plan and is two stories high with a three-window range.
The ground floor includes a three-bay arcade supported by timber Tuscan columns, leading to an entablature, cornice, and parapet. The left bay is open to a recessed doorway with an architrave surrounding a six-panel door, while the middle and right bays are filled in with cambered heads over six-over-six pane sashes. The house has clasping pilaster strips beneath overhanging boxed eaves, also featuring six-over-six pane sashes. The two-window returns at the rear face the river and have a similar open arcade as the front, with a 20th-century iron balustrade, which has canted up due to subsidence of the house.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have retained original features. This building is a significant visual element within the largely complete Georgian dockyard and was originally built as offices for the dockyard's two Master Attendants, who were responsible for the ships moored in the river, either in Ordinary or awaiting repair.
