Description
The Church of St Margaret is a parish church located on Cooling Road in High Halstow. It dates back to the 13th century and was enlarged in the late 15th century, with the west tower being rebuilt in the 18th century. The church is constructed from flint ragstone and features a lead roof over the nave. The layout includes a west tower, a nave with a south porch, and a lean-to south aisle that continues as a chapel almost to the east end, along with a north aisle and chancel.
The west tower is made of ragstone with a red brick plinth, buttresses, quoins, and parapets. The nave has clerestory windows, and the chancel includes an east window that was renewed in the 19th century. Inside, there are three bay nave arcades from the 13th century, featuring round piers, two hollow chamfers on the arches, and finely undercut caps and bases. The tower arch is in the Perpendicular style. The north chapel arch from the chancel is hardly chamfered and has angle-shafts with moulded bases and caps. The south chapel arch is pointed but unchamfered, with almost Romanesque capitals and shafts on the southeast respond. The chancel arch is from the 15th century, and there is a piscina in the chancel.
Notable fittings include an early 13th-century font with a plain square bowl supported by corner shafts and a central stem, as well as a 17th-century altar table.
