Description
The icehouse, built in the early 19th century, is part of the former East Dene estate and is located approximately 6 meters northeast of East Dene house. It is constructed of brick and features an earth-covered, round structure with a dome roof, likely extending below in a cone shape, similar to other icehouses. The icehouse is set into a bank on the south side of East Dene’s main drive.
A survey conducted in 1997 noted a round-arch entrance passage on the south side, which was not accessible during the site visit in 2023. The survey also suggested there may be an access hole at the top of the brick dome, although this feature was not observed during the latest visit.
The top of the north and west sides of the icehouse, along with part of its domed roof, are visible. The bricks are laid with the headers facing outward. The exposed section has suffered damage, resulting in the loss of some brickwork. A large hole has revealed a rendered inner wall and indicated a narrow cavity between it and the outer wall; cavity walls were sometimes used in icehouses for added insulation, with the walls rendered to manage condensation. The interior of the icehouse was not accessible for inspection.
