Description

East Dene is a building constructed around 1825-1830 for Mr. Surman, designed by Mr. Beazley. It is one of the early examples of Undercliff Tudor-Gothic architecture. In 1837, Admiral Charles Henry Swinburne leased the property; he was the father of poet Algernon Swinburne, who wrote some of his earliest poetry here. Algernon is buried with his family in St. Boniface's Churchyard.

The house is two storeys high and built of rough dressed stone, topped with a steep pitch slate roof. The main facade faces south and features six windows with mullioned casements, two gables with kneelers—one topped with a round chimney pot and the other with a finial. There are projecting window bays beneath the gables, with the eastern bay supported by buttresses and featuring a canted bay on the ground floor. The first floor has three oriel windows.

The west, or entrance front, has five windows and three gables adorned with ornamental bargeboards, along with projecting window bays below. The section between the center and the northernmost projection is jettied, supported by stone corbel brackets. This front also includes two canted bay windows on the ground floor and a parapeted porch. The interior reflects a successful imitation of Tudor style. There is a glazed link walkway leading to the former stable block, which is now the Annexe.
