Description
The Totland Bay War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and features cast-iron railings.
The memorial consists of a short obelisk atop a square pedestal that has a molded cap, recessed panels, and a chamfered plinth, all set on a three-stepped base. The north panel of the pedestal is inscribed with ‘1914-1919/ REMEMBER/ THOSE WHO DIED/ FOR US’, while the names of the fallen are inscribed on the other faces. Below the recessed north-facing panel, the inscription ‘1939-1945’ has been added, along with 15 names on the chamfer and foot of the pedestal. An additional name has been added below the list at a later time. The memorial is enclosed by cast-iron bar railings and stands on paving within a grassed area. A path leads from the memorial to the pavement, and four dwarf stone bollards are positioned in front of the memorial at the edge of the grassed area.
