Description

West Court is a manor house, now a farmhouse, with an east wing said to date from around 1500, a main portion built in 1579, and a south-west wing and projecting elements added in the early 17th century. It is constructed of Isle of Wight stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a mainly tiled roof, with lower courses of stone slates. The chimneys have stone bases and stacks of red brick. The design is based on a 'half H' plan, with a projection to the north front.

The building is two storeys and has attics in the gable ends. The north front, now facing the garden, was originally the principal façade, and has six windows. The western end features two gables with stone coping and kneelers, incorporating two blocked double mullioned attic windows. The first floor has two 3-light stone mullioned windows, with a single mullioned window centrally placed between them. The ground floor has a 4-light mullioned window on the left and a 3-light mullioned window on the right, both with relieving arches. A central 18th-century doorcase has a flat wooden hood supported by brackets. A deep plinth runs around the building. The western return has a similar gable with more elaborate kneelers and a triple mullioned window.

To the east end of the north front is a two-storey projection added in the early 17th century, with gables facing north and east, and featuring stone coping and kneelers, and a single stone mullioned window in each gable. Within the western angle of this projection is a smaller square projection dating from c.1579, forming a porch with a room above. This was originally the central feature of the north front before the early 17th-century east addition was constructed. A stone string course, cornice and parapet are present.

An obtusely pointed doorway, originally facing north but now facing west, has a doorcase bearing the initials I L (likely representing either John Leigh or John Lisle), with a 16th-century 3-panelled oak door behind. The south-east wing has three windows – one original mullioned window, and the others from the 18th century, with brick surrounds. A central chimneystack rises with three square brick stacks, and another chimneystack is positioned at the angle between the south-west and north wing. The south end originally housed a brewhouse on the ground floor, with a cheese room above. The south-west wing is shorter than the others, with one gable facing west, another facing south, and a single mullioned window. There's a chimneystack with two square brick chimney stacks. The south front has four windows, mainly stone mullioned windows, although some on the ground floor have been replaced by 19th-century casements. Two modern doors are visible, and an obtusely pointed stone doorcase is found on the western front of the south-east projection. A prominent feature is a projecting external stone chimneybreast with two brick stacks set diagonally.
