Description

St Joseph's Convent of Mercy is an early 19th-century house, now a nunnery, located on Bristol Road in Brighton. The building is constructed of stucco and brick in Flemish bond, with a roof hidden behind a parapet.

It is two storeys over a basement, originally with a six-window front and a two-window return. The ground floor features banded rustication and a stucco storey band. The first floor is of brown brick, with window lintels made of gauged brick. Ranges two, three, and four project slightly. A flat-arched entry with an overlight is in the second-window range.

All the windows are flat-arched. The original design of 3 x 6 sashes is visible in windows of the first, third, and fourth ranges of the ground floor, as well as in the first and second window ranges on the first floor. 6 x 6 sashes are present in the second and fourth window ranges of the first floor. One ground-floor window on the return is blocked. A single-storey canted bay with tripartite windows, a coved cornice, and crenellated parapet is located near the right-hand corner of the ground floor. A brick entablature and dentil cornice to the first floor are topped by a stucco parapet. Stacks are situated on the end walls and between the fourth and fifth window ranges. The interior has not been inspected.
