Description
Richmond Baths, located in Old Deer Park, is a public swimming facility built between 1964 and 1966 by architect Leslie Gooday, with engineering by Stanley Weddle for Richmond Urban District Council, later London Borough of Richmond. The structure features an exposed steel frame with an I-shaped section, which is visible on the exterior and clad in handmade bricks. The pool hall has large glazed areas on three sides, complemented by some slate hanging at the entrance. The flat roof, made of treated copper, has deep eaves and rises over the former diving area.
Inside, there is a 33.3 metre pool and a learner pool situated in a single hall that faces southwest. Above the changing area, there is a bank of spectator seating, part of which has been adapted into a café area. An open-air pool or lido connects to the main building via steps leading up to a sunbathing terrace, which continues inside as a bridge, creating a partial barrier between the two pools. The entrance is located in a wing behind the changing area, which also includes a dance studio; this design reduces the building's visual impact from Old Deer Park.
The main facade consists of 14 bays that are fully glazed beneath a deep fascia, featuring elegant tripartite steel windows with a single low transom that extends around the corners. The entrance elevation is mostly blank, with double doors flanking a slate hanging that displays a plaque for the Civic Trust Award received in 1967. The pools and pool hall are decorated with white and blue tiling, including some mosaic work and decorative brickwork at the ends.
The building is enclosed by a wall designed as part of the original scheme, using the same bricks and attention to detail, which provides privacy for the sunbathing area and outdoor pool. Richmond Baths is recognized as an exceptionally elegant example of municipal baths.
