Description

Hampton Court House is a building dating from 1757, with 19th century additions and alterations. Originally built for the mistress of the Earl of Halifax, it now serves as an old people's home. The house features two main storeys, a basement, and an attic. The entrance front, which is from the 19th century, is seven bays wide with the end bays projecting. The centerpiece is a three-window canted bay topped with a dome and cupola. The structure is made of brown brick with stone dressings above a channelled stucco basement, and it has a stone cornice, blocking course, and a balustrated parapet. Set back on either side are two-storey wings. The front includes a pair of single-storey pavilions with arched windows.

The garden front, which dates from the 18th century, consists of two storeys plus a basement and attic, with eleven bays and a five-bay projecting centre. There are single-storey wings of three bays on either side, a cornice, and a subsidiary cornice between the main storeys. The outer bays are adorned with stucco Doric pilasters, and steps lead to the central entrance. To the north, there is a glazed conservatory from around 1870 and a ballroom, which is now used as a theatre. The building is notable for its large frieze of Tuscan pilasters and a heavy pedimented cornice, with coloured brickwork on the lower wall. The interior has not been seen.
