Description

The Grotto in the grounds of Hampton Court House is a Grade II* listed structure completed by Thomas Wright by 1769. It is constructed from stone, shells, and bricks. The grotto features a central arch with two layers of rusticated stone voussoirs, and the central bay projects outward. The two outer bays are now covered in foliage. Inside, there are remains of a stuccoed domed ceiling painted with stars, along with extensive shellwork. This grotto is part of a garden layout designed by Thomas Wright, much of which still exists today.
