Description
The Former Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum at Wanstead Hospital, located to the northwest of Wanstead Hospital, was opened in 1863 and closed in 1921. It has since served various purposes, including a convent and hospital, before being converted into apartments in the late 1990s. Designed by George Somers Clarke, the building features a symmetrical design made of banded red brick with Ancaster stone dressings. It stands three storeys high, with gable dormers in a hipped tiled roof and a tower topped with a squat spire, showcasing a modified Venetian gothic style. Notable external features include the tower and spire, as well as the porch supported by Devonshire marble columns. The great hall was added in 1866.
