Description
The Memorial Gardens War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1922 to honor the soldiers from Ilford who died in the 1914-1918 war. It features a stone obelisk topped with a cross, set on a tall stone plinth raised on three steps. On the south side of the obelisk is a bronze life-size figure of a soldier, created by the sculptor Newbury Abbot Trent. The memorial was funded by public subscription and was unveiled on 22 November by H.R.H. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll. An identical version of the soldier figure by Newbury Trent, who lived from 1885 to 1953, can be found in Tredegar, Gwent, and was completed in 1924.
