Description
New Malden War Memorial is located on the pavement next to the High Street in New Malden.
The memorial features a tall, three-tiered cenotaph set on a plinth with a two-stepped base, all surrounded by a chain supported by short posts. The upper tier of the cenotaph has a laurel wreath carved in relief and is topped with anti-pigeon spikes. The middle tier displays a bronze sword, while the lower tier is inscribed with the words: IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES / FOR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918. A plaque on the join between the lower tier and the plinth reads AND THE / 1939 - 1945 WAR. The front face of the plinth features another plaque that commemorates the centenary of the Great War and honors all members of the armed forces, including police, fire, and ambulance services, who lost their lives since the end of both wars. This plaque was laid by the Malden and Coombe Branch of the Royal British Legion and concludes with the phrase WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
The right and left faces of the cenotaph are inscribed with the names of the Fallen, which have been overlaid with bronze plaques that provide a fuller list of names. The right-face plaque commemorates Armed Forces casualties from the Second World War, and there is also a smaller, newer plaque honoring Lieutenant HOB Firman, VC. The left-face plaque recognizes the Fallen of the First World War, while the rear face plaque lists civilian casualties from the Second World War. Additionally, the rear face of the plinth has a plaque stating that DAMAGE TO THIS MEMORIAL / WAS CAUSED BY A GERMAN BOMB / WHICH FELL TWENTY FEET AWAY / ON 16TH. OCTOBER 1940.
