Description
Dated 1863 and designed by George Devey, Coombe Hill Stables were originally part of Coombe Cottage, also built by Devey in 1863. The stables present as a picturesque grouping of three main sections. The entrance block, at the south end, is two storeys high with a gabled attic. It’s constructed of yellow sandstone and yellow brick with red brick dressings. A carriageway leads through to the stable yard, featuring a four-centred archway with a moulded brick arch, faced with alternating black and white stone voussoirs. To the left of the archway is a gable, and to its left is a tall brick chimney stack with two prominent angle shafts. The roofs are steeply pitched and tiled. Two long, single-storey stable buildings extend back from the left, facing Beverley Lane, also constructed of similar materials and with pantiled roofs. One of these stable buildings is lower and has a timber bell-cote topped with an ogee leaded cupola and a wrought iron weather vane.
