Description
Cleave's Almshouses, dated 1668, is a long range of twelve two-storey dwellings. The centre gable, which has been partly rebuilt, features a moulded brick verge and a sundial, positioned above a slate descriptive tablet with a carved stone surround and a broken pedimented top. The building has a tiled roof with hipped ends and twelve chimneys. There are six windows on each side of the centre gable, and three oval windows above the central doorway, all with gauged brick surrounds. The central door is divided into two halves, each with six moulded and fielded panels, flanked by two windows on each side. The surround to the central door includes chamfered quoins and a head. Each of the twelve dwellings has its own door, which features hoods. The building also has a moulded brick eaves cornice and a flat string at the first-floor level, along with a splayed brick plinth. The windows are casement style with lancet lead lights.
