Description
The Chiswick War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1921, designed by Edward Willis. It is made of Cornish granite and is located at the eastern corner of Turnham Green. The memorial features an obelisk set on a square earthen mound, which is topped with granite paving. A low tubular bronze rail runs between bevelled square granite piers and continues down a flight of five granite steps on the north-east side of the monument.
The obelisk is placed on a plinth with a moulded top and a two-stepped base. The shaft of the obelisk is adorned with a bronze laurel wreath, while the plinth has a bronze plaque that reads, "IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF CHISWICK/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914…1918." The upper step of the base is inscribed with, "AND IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945." The mound surrounding the memorial is bordered by a stone kerb.
