Description

Boston Manor House, located in Boston Manor Park, was built between 1622 and 1623, with a north wing added in the 18th century. This three-storey building with attics is constructed of red brick and features six windows framed in stone architraves. A stone cornice separates the second and third storeys, and there is a stone porch with a balustrade similar to that at Lilford Hall in Northamptonshire, built in 1635.

Inside, the house boasts impressive early 17th-century ceilings and fine 18th-century wallpaper on the upper staircase. The main staircase is elaborately carved. The drawing room ceiling is divided by moulded ribs into oblong and square panels, which are further enhanced by semi-circular and segmental cuspings, connected by short cross-ribs. Some of the panels contain strap-work cartouches featuring emblematic figures, including representations of the four elements, designed by the 17th-century Dutch artist Mare Gheercerts and engraved by Galle.

The house suffered damage during the war but underwent extensive restoration before reopening in 1963. It is currently occupied by the National Institute for Housecraft Limited.
