Description
The Church of St Andrew is a parish church located in West Hillingdon, built between 1864 and 1866 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It features red and grey brick with stone dressings, a five-bay nave and aisles, and a chancel with a side chapel beneath a broad south-east tower topped with a broach spire. A north-east vestry was added in the 1870s, and there is a south porch with steep tiled roofs. The church is designed in the Decorated style, showcasing some plate tracery in the tower glazing.
The east window consists of three lights, while the aisle windows are made up of paired lancets. Although there is no clerestory, two dormers were added by George Jack in 1927. The organ, originally from Christ Church, Blackfriars, was rebuilt in 1898 and relocated in the 1920s. The font, designed by Scott, was moved to its current position in 1924. The reredos was created by Farmer and Brindley, and the chancel screen, designed in 1872 by Sir George Scott and possibly executed by John Oldrid Scott, features painted scenes with an upper part added by George Jack in 1925.
The church contains excellent stained glass, including the east window by Clayton and Bell, west windows by Lavers, Barraud and Westlake, and various works in the south aisle, such as an Annunciation by James Powell and Sons, a Nativity, and 'Christ preaching to the Elders' by Clayton and Bell, as well as 'Christ healing the Lame Man' and 'Baptism of Christ' by Jones and Willis. The chancel murals, painted by Alfred Hemmings in 1892, coincided with the tiling of the floor and the replacement of the altar. The pulpit was added in 1927, and there is a side altar adorned with angels on the screen and benches.
