Description

The Church of St John, located on Church Road in Stanmore, was begun in 1849 and designed in the Decorated Gothic style by Henry Clutton. It is listed for its significant monuments that were transferred from the Old Church, including memorials to John Burnell (died 1605), John Dalton (died 1785), and Sir John Wolstenholme (died 1699) under a canopied monument in the tower. Other notable figures commemorated include Sir John Wolstenholme (died 1634, with an effigy by Nicholas Stone), John Wolstenholme (died 1669), John Dalton (by Bacon, 1791), Elizabeth Dalton (died 1812), and the First Earl of Aberdeen (by Boehm, 1875). The font, also transferred, was created by Nicholas Stone around 1632. The tower contains numerous other 18th century and early 19th century wall monuments. The south aisle features two-light stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones from 1885, while the five-light east window, created by Thomas Willement around 1849, was made for Queen Victoria. In the north aisle, there are centre two-light windows from around 1896, designed in the style of C E Kempe, possibly by Burlison and Grylls.
