Description
The War Memorial, built in 1920, is made of grey Cornish granite that is roughly hewn at the base. It features a large Celtic cross adorned with interlace designs on the arms and upper parts of the shaft. The memorial stands on a two-stage base, which is elevated by three square steps. On each side of the base are rectangular bronze panels that list the names of 57 men from Stanmore who did not return from the Great War. The front panel bears the inscription: '1914 - 1918. Remember with thanksgiving the true and faithful men who in these years of war went forth from this place for God and the right, the names of those who returned not again are here inscribed to be honoured for evermore.' The memorial was dedicated on 22nd July 1922 by the local vicar and cost £700. It is a notably large example of its kind and holds significant group value with both the old and new churches of Stanmore, as well as the picturesque graveyard surrounding them.
