Description

The Presbytery, located at No. 66 on Crooms Hill, dates from around 1630 and features alterations and additions from the 18th century. This two-storey building with an attic has four windows, including those in twin gables. It is constructed of brick, washed with Venetian red, and has a slate roof. The first floor displays blind panels of varying widths, divided into irregular bays by moulded brick Doric pilasters. These support a continuous brick entablature that rests on a brick band at the first floor level, which is broken around the bases and features flat corbels with shaped sides tapering to a point. Above, a high brick parapet is adorned with twin pedimented gables. Each gable has a square panel above a window in a recessed semi-circular tympanum, with sloping parapets on either side leading to the main parapet. The building has three-light flush mullion and transom windows with rectangular leading, which have been renewed. The central door consists of six panels and features a wood-blocked fanlight beneath a renewed round gauged brick arch. Four stone steps lead up to the door, flanked by wrought iron curved handrails with twist standards. To the left, there is an old round-arched entrance to a passageway, and a small window has been inserted to the left of the right gable window. The listed buildings on the west side of Crooms Hill, from Nos 54 to 68, form a group.
