Description

Severndroog Castle, located in Castle Wood Park, is a Grade II* listed building dating from 1784. It is a three-storey triangular tower featuring hexagonal angle turrets that rise to half a storey. The tower and turrets are topped with battlements and constructed from multicoloured stock brick, which includes a first-floor band and a plinth. The turrets have quatrefoil blocked and painted windows, while other windows are designed with two-centred, pointed arches; these are wide on the main faces and narrow on the three external faces of each turret. Moulded labels are present over the windows, with some blocked and treated to resemble trompe l'oeil, particularly at the tops of the turrets.

The first-floor windows are set in wide, stuccoed recesses. A small door with an alternating block surround can be found in the inner return of the northeast turret, and later doors have been inserted in the northwest and south turrets. The main entrance, a studded double door on the southwest face, features a moulded surround with deep coving and a label above it. This entrance also includes a cornice head and a fanlight with interlacing bars that match the window heads. The former entrances on the other two sides have been blocked, leaving only the fanlights.

An inscription in the stone apron below the first-floor window on the southwest face reads: "This building was erected MDCCLXXXIV by the representative of the late Sir William James, Bart. To Commemorate that Gallant Officer's Atchievements in the East Indies during his command of the Company's Marine Forces in those seas. And in a particular manner to record the Conquest off the Coast of Malabar which fell to his superior Valour and able Conduct on the 2nd day of April MDCCLV."
