Description

Broomfield House is a house of several periods, dating back to the 16th century with significant alterations in the 18th century. The southern part appears to be of the 16th century and originally had high-pitched hipped roofs in the shape of a square, now slated. The northern part was built in the early 18th century and also features a hipped roof, now slated. Two old compound brick chimney stacks are present. The roofs are largely hidden by parapets.

The north front has two storeys and four windows. It is constructed of 18th-century red brick, which was formerly painted. A cornice band and a first-floor band are visible. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars set in wooden reveals; the ground-floor sashes have been replaced. All other facades are covered in 20th-century roughcast and mock half-timbering. A one-story recessed porch is located on the western entrance. Some windows are late 18th or early 19th-century sashes with glazing bars.

Inside the southern end of the house, some original timber framing remains, including heavy chamfered beams with joiners' marks, and chamfered joists. A good 18th-century staircase has three different balusters per tread, carved tread ends, and a ramped handrail. There is one fine panelled room with an ornamental cornice and chimney piece; some carving may have been imported. Staircase walls and ceiling are attributed to Sir J Thornhill, but this attribution is doubtful and the work may be by a copyist or has been poorly painted over.
