Description

The Promenade de Verdun War Memorial is located on the Woodcote Estate in Purley. It comprises a landscaped area featuring a long, straight road, approximately half a kilometer long and the only straight road on the estate, which leads up to an obelisk memorial. This location was selected due to the gradual incline of the land, which originally offered views of five counties.

The memorial landscape is anchored by a substantial granite obelisk, approximately six meters high, which serves as a focal point. The obelisk was carved from a single block of stone in a Cornish quarry by The London Granite Co. Ltd. The south end of the road finishes in a circular drive, bordered by tall hedges. A crescent-shaped area of grass is situated in front of the hedges, displaying the obelisk. An inscription on the north face reads: AUX/ SOLDATS DE FRANCE/ MORTS GLORIEUSEMENT/ PENDANT LA GRAND GUERRE.
