Description
The water trough at Widmore Green is a granite cattle trough built in 1904 by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association. It features a long rectangular double trough supported by four granite blocks, with rounded granite bollards at each support on the roadside. One end has an ogee-shaped granite gable, which includes a semi-circular bowl for a human drinking fountain. The trough bears the inscription, 'METROPOLITAN DRINKING FOUNTAIN AND CATTLE TROUGH ASSOCIATION'. Although it is now used as a planting bed, the trough remains in good condition and is located in its original position.
Historically, the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association began installing water troughs for cattle in 1867 due to growing concerns for animal welfare. In Bromley, local resident Dr Herbert Smith played a key role in establishing two cattle troughs in 1904, including this one, which was ceremonially opened on 6 August 1904 by Dr Smith and the Association.
This granite cattle trough is an attractive example of Victorian street furniture, reflecting the charitable and civic values of its time.
