Description
Eton Fives Court, built around 1840, is located in High Elms Country Park. Constructed of brick in English bond with a rendered interior, the building features a temporary 20th-century roof made of wood and corrugated sheeting. The walls have a plinth and coping, terminating in piers, with a projection on the left side.
The court is designed for a handball game played by two pairs of players using a small ball struck with either a bare or gloved hand. Its design is inspired by part of the College Chapel at Eton, where the game was originally played. The court includes a replica of part of the chapel's steps, wall, and buttress. This example dates from shortly after the first courts, which were established around 1840. It is recognized for its architectural and historical significance as a rare type of building that was still in use for its original purpose at the time of survey.
