Description

A late 19th-century house, formerly known as Orange Hill House, now located at Buckle Court. The house is asymmetrically arranged, probably dating to the late 19th century, and displays Tudor influences in its design. It is built of red brick with stone dressings, and features separate red tiled gable and hipped roofs at varying levels. The principal element is a four-storied tower with oriel windows that rises to a belvedere, topped with a swept roof lantern and ornate finial. The windows are generally mullioned and transomed. The building has prominent chimney stacks with decorative ribs. Claude Grahame-White, a pioneer of aviation, lived at the house from 1912 to 1915, entertaining guests including Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso, and Guglielmo Marconi.
