Description
St Francis Chapel, originally the chapel to St Mary's Abbey School, was built in 1888-9 by Goldie, Child and Goldie. It is constructed of red brick with stone detailing and has a slate roof topped by a pyramidal tower over the crossing, with a single lucarne (dormer window) on each face. The building is designed in the Early English style, with a cruciform plan incorporating a nave and three side chapels on each side. A single-story cloister walk runs behind the chapel, connecting the convent with Holcombe House via the sacristies. The west elevation features a large rose window, while the south side has a large window composed of four lancets. Paired lancets are located at clerestory level. The interior features a simple vaulted timber roof in the tower, and barrel-vaulted roofs in the nave and chapels. The interior walls are lined with yellow stock brick and contain simple stone moulded arches at the crossing and leading into the side chapels. Original features include the nuns' stalls and the organ positioned behind the altar, along with a metal altar rail, candle holders, and chandeliers.
