Description
This is a house located at 22 Meadway in Hampstead Garden Suburb, built in 1909 by architects Bunney and Makins. The structure is made of brick, with the corners designed to resemble quoins, and features alternating purple and red brick courses in header bond beneath round brick relieving arches over the ground-floor windows, which have a decorative lozenge at the center. The house has a hipped tile roof with swept and boxed eaves, and a concave metal roof over the entrance porch.
It is two storeys high with dormers and has a five-window range. The design blends elements of English Renaissance with Arts and Crafts details and finishes. The elevation is bilaterally symmetrical, though the spacing of the windows varies slightly. All windows feature two-light casements of original design. On either side of the entrance, there are downspouts with heart-shaped rainwater heads dated 1909, featuring the initials HL and FL.
There are three segmental-arched dormers with tile-hung returns. The right return has an outshut with an elliptical light and another dormer, providing an additional entrance. The chimney breast at the rear wing has two offsets, while the left return has a chimney breast with a single offset. Each stack is accompanied by a dormer with glazed returns. To the right, there is a flat-roofed garage that is of later date and not considered of special interest. The overall design is subtle and thoughtfully executed, generating architectural interest through varied proportions.
