Description

BARNET TQ2588 MEADWAY, Hampstead Garden Suburb 31-0/26/10198 (South West side) No.22

GV II

House. 1909. Bunney and Makins. Brick, at corners treated as quoins; alternating purple and red courses in header bond under round brick relieving arches to ground-floor windows with decorative lozenge at centre. Hipped roof of tile, swept and boxed eaves. Concave roof of metal to entrance porch. Two storeys and dormers; five-window range. Blend of English Renaissance with an Arts and Crafts feeling for details and finishes. Bilaterally symmetrical elevation, the window spacings varied slightly. Two-light casements of original design to all windows. Flanking entrance range are downspouts with heart-shaped rainwater heads dated 1909 with initials HL and FL. Three segmental-arched dormers with tile-hung returns. Outshut to rear of right return with elliptical light and dormer; another entrance. Chimney breast with two offsets in angles of rear wing; chimney breast with single offset to left return. Each stack with abutting dormer having glazed returns. Flat-roofed garage to right later in date and not of special interest. A subtle and considered design, where considerable architectural interest and surprise are generated by varying the proportions.
